Austerity in the United Kingdom and its legacy: Lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic revealed that public institutions and some households in the United Kingdom (UK) were a vulnerable weak financial position to mitigate its immediate outcomes. Public did not have necessary resources support their communities low-income groups disproportionally affected by economic contraction of 2020–2021. This paper explores how disastrous consequences exacerbated implementation an austerity programme, as extension neoliberal ideology, supported development market at expense reducing welfare state. Through assessment four trends reinforced during austerity—the ‘Ds’—this article shows influenced many struggles observed pandemic. These are disinvestment, decentralisation, decollectivisation disintegration. Despite lessons learnt 2020–2021 evident need move away from agenda dismantled capacities state, this concludes neoliberalism continues threaten state formation social collectivities. Some expenditure decisions taken British government could further deepen class divisions regional inequalities. More is needed tackle these problems build fairer more equal society.
